R-71 Qualifies for November Ballot!

The R-71 juggernaut keeps on rolling! As you may have already heard, we reached and surpassed our goal of 120,577 valid signatures. Although we continue to run a gauntlet of legal challenges to our efforts, we are confident that R-71 is heading for the November 3rd ballot!

Washington State Republican Party endorses R-71 effort: On Saturday, August 29th, the Washington State Republican Party gave a resounding and enthusiastic endorsement to our efforts with R-71 to defeat SB 5688 in November. I personally attended the state committee meeting in Wenatchee and came away mightily impressed with the conservative resolve shown on this issue by Chairman Luke Esser and the WSRP state committee! A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR GOOD FRIENDS AT THE WASHINGTON STATE REPUBLICAN PARTY!
I want you to focus with me for just a moment on the date of November 3, 2009, which is coming fast. We will have an opportunity that day to stand firm in our resolve to defend marriage for years to come in the state of Washington. A resounding victory in November is what we need, but we are going to have to pull together in a big way if we are to succeed. The main battle for our values has just begun.

As we move the campaign into high gear again, I want to take a moment to thank some of the truly outstanding people on our campaign team who have sacrificed so greatly of the own personal time and treasure:

Pastors Roy and Valerie Hartwell of Rivers of Glory Church in Lacey have headed up our signature observations teams in Olympia for the past month, trading the better half of their summer to work in cramped quarters under intense pressure. They have logged hundreds of hours without compensation, working double shifts from 7:30am - 10:30pm as they organized and supervised dozens of other terrific volunteer observers. We cannot begin to thank them enough for all they have done for the campaign.

Stephen Pidgeon has provided the R-71 campaign with his exceptional legal skills as our in-house attorney. We are more than fortunate to have found such a great friend to Washington State families. Steve has sacrificed a great deal for the R-71 team, having put his personal law practice and vacation time on hold time and time again to help our cause. He has not charged us one dime for the scores of hours he has logged so far for the R-71 campaign.

I can say with all confidence that we would not be here today talking about a November election without the aid of these terrific folks. They have stepped up at this critical time and they have borne the burden of the more difficult tasks at hand. We would like to be able to able to cover at least some of their expenses and perhaps even provide them some compensation as they have sacrificed for our cause so greatly.

I'm asking you to give generously to the campaign - and to please give today if at all possible. We have got to raise money if we want to win in November! We have a battle plan in place and a skilled campaign team to carry it out. ALL WE ARE LACKING IS THE MONEY TO CARRY IT OUT THE PLAN! You have helped us get this far, can we count on you now to dig down deep with your most generous donation?

The R-71 campaign has been called "historic" for a number of reasons. We would like to see it remembered as the time when Washington State regained its moral footing and political sanity.

Mission

The mission of the new PAC is to organize the effort to gather the 120,577 required signatures for Referendum 71 by July 25, 2009 to bring the controversial Senate Bill 5688 before the voters of Washington State in November. SB 5688 is a 110 page document which includes the phrase "marriage shall apply equally to state registered domestic partnerships" 180 times.

SB 5688 was packaged and presented to the legislature as a Domestic Partnerships expansion of benefits. In truth, it will demolish the state's historical understanding and definition of marriage as that of uniting a man and a woman for life as Washington State will immediately become subject to litigation by same-sex partners demanding that the courts overturn the Defense of Marriage Act and impose "same-sex marriage" (as happened recently in California prior to Proposition 8).
